Gold Seal

A Grey Seal Bull (Halichoerus grypus) resting amongst the Marram Grass in the dunes at Winterton, Norfolk, England. I captured the image using a shallow depth of field, with the aperture wide open, which helped create a painterly effect and draw the viewer into the scene. The warm colours were provided by the golden light of sunrise and enhanced by the cloudy white balance setting on my camera. The challenge was to capture the seals eye in focus, as the grass swayed back and forth, and to avoid any distracting grass appearing in the plane of focus in front of the seals face.
