Grey Heron feeding Young

I was privileged to photograph a family of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) at their nest. This allowed me the opportunity to witness a lot of really interesting behaviour but my favourite was feeding. This didn’t happen very regularly, maybe once in a 4 hour photography session, and often didn’t last very long. However, the interaction was always very entertaining. As soon as the young birds saw the adult flying towards their nest it sent them into a frenzy, beaks wide open and head feathers standing to attention. In this image, the adult bird is looking larger than normal with its feathers fluffed up as the young Herons jostle for position and access to the adults beak.
